Out and About STYLE Magazine

Tell us a bit about yourself, your business background and how did you move to Dubai?

My name is Marsha Fry; I’m a British-Jamaican educational leader with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Science Teaching and a Master’s degree in Inclusive Education (Special Educational Needs). Over the years, I served as a Mathematics teacher, education consultant, school leadership trainer, curriculum manager, vice-principal, and most recently, Training and Implementation Manager in an Artificial Intelligence-based company. I moved to Dubai on a whim in 2010 from London looking to explore what the UAE had to offer for educators like me.

Along with a successful career in education, and a self-confessed fashionista, I also founded Out and About Style and the UAE-based publication, Out and About STYLE Magazine.

Out and About Style is a fashion company providing chic and affordable ready to wear clothing. Our brand’s vision is to create head-turning pieces to prove our “Out and About” fashion statement.

Out and About STYLE Magazine is an all-in-one monthly publication that covers fashion, beauty, lifestyle, arts, culture and our segment called 'Behind the Brand' which is an inspiring journey of a life of an entrepreneur. We also have special features including, 'Taking Lessons', which looks into the lives of career-driven individuals, their amazing stories how to balance their own careers, entrepreneurship, and providing a voice to people who might not be able to speak for themselves.

Out and About STYLE Magazine is the only Middle East-based English magazine that produces celebrity-free and gossip-free content. Instead, we focus on everyday heroes- real people living extraordinary lives. We believe that our biggest inspiration will come from people that are 'more reachable' - an everyday individual.

Why did you decide to start your own magazine?

The magazine came out of the need to be my own media and also to provide the world with a publication that represents the masses - the real people. I found that it was necessary to provide a medium for the public to see people in the media that were like them. People that will give them real inspiration rather than the cliché celebrity and celebrity gossip which we constantly get inundated with.

Out and About STYLE Magazine also serves as a platform that touches on real topics that everyday people can relate to.

What are the adifficulties of running a printed magazine in the UAE?

I would say the only challenge is the costs involved in running a publication, in general.

«I think I came pretty close to my dreams, don’t you think?»

Out and About STYLE Magazine is an online monthly fashion, beauty, lifestyle, talent and culture magazine. It was launched in February 2019 to an amazing public response. We are currently based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, however, our message of fashion, beauty, business, cultural diversity, and acceptance is one that resonates around the world.

What are the benefits of running a magazine?

The biggest benefits of running a publication are learning new skills and the ability to learn from inspirational people on a daily basis.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Inspiration for the magazine comes from everywhere - from conversations with colleagues, social media, the news - just absolutely everywhere.

In terms of inspiration for myself, my inspiration comes from my mother- she’s a hustler extraordinaire. My mother is the strongest human that this earth has ever possessed. She is the definition of hard work, perseverance and reinvention.

Who are your readers and what do you offer them?

Our readers are mainly educated men and women from across the world, most of which reside in the GCC. They are people who seek knowledge on everyday issues and those who are looking for inspirational content.

What's your superpower?

Endurance to overcome difficulties and hardships, strength to help continue the fight and resilience in everything that may come in my way.

What are your strategic plans for the next 5 years?

To take over the world!

Other than that, we aim to expand the magazine further to include more content (people) from across the GCC. The plan is also to get a lot more involved in the events space.

Who is your role model?

My mom - she’s the real deal!

What’s your life mission?

To be a light in the world.

Your childhood dream?

I had a couple, as I do with everything- smile

To become a hairdresser and own my own salon.

I spent a lot of my early days perfecting plaiting and braiding grass, asking my imaginary customers about their likes and dislikes, and how they would like to get their hair done. My hairdressing continued into my teenage to adult life, and I regularly did my friends’ hair.

To be a fashion designer.

As with my salon in the grass, I created the most beautiful outfits, in my head, out of bin liners and other plastic bags and had my sister and neighbours strut the runway in my fabulous designs.

To become a paediatrician

I started on the journey but found out very early in the first year of medical school that I was not going to enjoy this career. I cried for days for my parents to take me out of medical school, which they refused, but my grandmother came to my rescue - bless her heart. I then left and went to train to become a teacher.

I think I came pretty close to my dreams, don’t you think?
