Expo 2020 Dubai hosts Terry Fox Run on 5th February
The popular Terry Fox Run, recognised globally for its contribution to cancer research over four decades, returns to Dubai on 5 February to mark World Cancer Day and as the final event of Expo 2020 Dubai Health and Wellness Week.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airlines and Group and Chairman of the Expo 2020 Dubai High Committee, which supported the first Terry Fox run in Dubai in 1994, this year it will take place through the Expo pavilions with the support of the Dubai Sports Council.
The event, originally conceived to raise awareness and support cancer research, takes its name from a young Canadian university student, Terry Fox, who lost his leg to cancer. Wanting to give hope to cancer patients, the amputee ran 5,373 km – almost a marathon every day for 143 days – to raise funds for cancer research. When he had to stop running because his cancer returned, millions of people around the world decided to continue his quest by taking part in the Terry Fox Run. The Terry Fox Run, held annually in 33 countries across five continents, has become the world’s largest fundraising event in support of cancer research.
Organised by the Dubai Canadian Business Council and held as part of Expo 2020 Dubai, this year’s Terry Fox Run in Dubai continues its tradition as a non-competitive family fun run of 3 or 5km. The event is open to all ages and abilities and participants can choose to run or walk. Prams are also welcome.
Commenting on the return of The Terry Fox Run to Dubai, H.E. Rima Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Managing Director of Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “Expo 2020 Dubai is proud to host The Terry Fox Run this year, not only continuing the tradition of hosting it in Dubai, but also paying tribute to its international stature by paving the course of the race through the pavilions of the world. Supporting medical research to enhance and improve quality of life is something that the UAE and its communities actively support, and raising awareness of World Cancer Day through this event at the end of our Health and Wellness Week is important to us all.”
Registration for the event is AED 100 per person and is free for children aged 11 and under. All participants will receive three Expo 2020 entry tickets giving full access to the Expo grounds. All net proceeds from registration will be donated to cancer research projects in the UAE approved by the Terry Fox Foundation.
Jean-Philippe Linto, Consul General of Canada in Dubai and the Northern Emirates said, “The Terry Fox Run is an initiative developed through the vision of an exceptional young Canadian that has caused a ripple effect around the world. We thank our Canadian partners for their work and the tremendous support from UAE organisations in hosting this important community event as part of Expo 2020 Dubai.”
This year’s Terry Fox Run was organised by the Dubai Canadian Business Council as part of its commitment to helping companies, professionals and organisations linked to Canada.
Paying tribute to Terry Fox’s Canadian heritage, the Terry Fox Run will begin and end at Jubilee Park, next to the Canada Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. Experienced run organisers will ensure all health and safety measures are in place with the support of Al Jalila Foundation and the Canadian University of Dubai.
