His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, was awarded the “Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice” in recognition of his efforts to protect the environment and achieve sustainable development, and for prioritizing sustainability and balancing economic and social development with environmental protection.
The award was presented to him at a ceremony held at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, President of the General Women’s Union (GWA), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood and Supreme President of the Family Development Fund (FDF), with the participation of His Highness Sheikh Tayyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Court of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Tolerance and Coexistence, awarded the prize winners.
The “Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice” is awarded annually to honour individuals and organisations that promote peace, equality and social justice, and is aimed at highlighting the cause of justice and peaceful coexistence. The main theme of this year’s award was environmental sustainability.
Al Falasi opened the event with a speech on behalf of Sheikha Fatima, welcoming the audience and expressing his joy over the award, which aims to honour people who have made valuable contributions to social justice, peace and tolerance.
In her speech, Sheikha Fatima stressed that honouring this year’s winners in the UAE would reinforce the values of tolerance and co-existence promoted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
“We all know what we need to do to promote the environmental sustainability that this year’s award celebrates. As a local community and as part of the wider international community, we need to be aware of the challenges and threats affecting the environment. Therefore, we need to make extra efforts to reduce the associated risks to humanity,” she said.
She then congratulated the institutional and individual laureates of the “Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice” and encouraged them to continue their outstanding achievements, tireless efforts, philanthropic and humanitarian work to help meet the challenges of the current era through science, knowledge, cooperation and dialogue.
In the presence of Al Falasi and Dr Abraham Mathai, founder and chairman of Harmony Foundation, Sheikh Nahyan presented the award to Sheikh Mansour, who represented His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, in recognition of his work and achievements in environmental protection, conservation of natural resources and adoption of sustainable development as a top priority, and in balancing economic and social development with environmental protection.
Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Ali Al Nuaimi, Executive Director of Al Ihsan Charitable Society, Saeed Al Rumaiti, Ahmed Al Mutaway and Muzna Al Mansouri were also recognised as young people making a difference in environmental sustainability and their awards highlighted the role of youth in preserving the environment.
Tatiana Antonelli Abella, founder and managing director of Goumbook, was also recognised for raising awareness in the local community about the dangers of pollution.
The “Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice” also recognised the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the Bhamla Foundation, Maitha Al Hamli, Director of Marine Assessment and Marine Conservation at the Abu Dhabi Environmental Protection Agency, and Arshi Ayoub Mohamed Zaveri, CEO of Trust with Trade Group.
