Asian Badminton Championship to take place in Expo City
The Dubai Sports Council and the Emirates Badminton Federation have announced the organisation of the Asian Mixed Team Badminton Championships to be held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Tolerance and Coexistence in the UAE, Honorary President of the Emirates Badminton Federation, and with the support of the Dubai Sports Council and the Emirates Badminton Federation, the event is organised by Beyond Bounders Sports Consultancy at Expo City from 14-19 February 2023, featuring 17 Asian countries.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Dubai Sports Council headquarters, which was addressed by Saeed Mohammed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council, Jassim Kenso, Vice President of the International Badminton Federation and Noura Al Jasmi, President of the Emirates Badminton Federation, in the presence of Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Assistant Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council. Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council and members of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Badminton Federation.
Also speaking at the press conference were Musa Nasheed, Secretary General of the Asian Badminton Federation, and Dr Satya Menon: CEO of Blue Ocean Corporation Group, and Indian badminton player PV Sindhu, ranked 6th in the world, who won silver in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and bronze in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
During the press conference, the champion trophy was unveiled and a draw ceremony was held for the participating teams, namely: China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, India, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Kazakhstan, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Syria, Lebanon and Pakistan in addition to the UAE. The tournament includes competitions in the men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories. The tournament will open with group matches followed by the knockout stage. The tournament will give players the opportunity to qualify for the world badminton championships, which are the Sudirman Cup, Thomas Cup, Uber and other major tournaments.
His Excellency Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council, congratulated the Emirates Badminton Federation on the induction of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan as Honorary President of the federation, stressing that the federation is on the verge of a new phase of development and prosperity, and welcomed those present as well as Olympic champion, world-class player BV Sindhu, ranked 6th in the World, and said: “We are proud to work with the Asian Badminton Federation and the Emirates Badminton Federation to host this great continental event which involves 17 Asian countries, including the strongest countries in the world, in this Olympic sport and this championship is a continuation of the World Badminton Championships in which Dubai pioneered, where four World Championships were held at the Hamdan Sports Complex, these were the finals of the World Championships which were held four years in a row.”
Saeed Hareb added: “Badminton enjoys a lot of interest in the United Arab Emirates in general and Dubai in particular as it is an Olympic sport.” Victor Axelsen of Denmark, who trained in Dubai, managed to win a gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and we hope that this championship will inspire a number of young men and women in the country to practice and develop in it, leading to an honourable representation of the country at world championships and Olympic tournaments.”
Hareb concluded: “Organising the tournament at Expo City will enhance the pageantry of the competition and inspire the athletes to perform at their best. We support all efforts to promote the sport and provide funds for successful championships in collaboration with the UAE Badminton Federation, which will enhance the diversity sought by the Dubai Sports Council.”
The event organisers aim to provide an opportunity for sports fans and the public of more than 200 nationalities to follow the various sporting tournaments.
