US$ 30.5 million raffled off at Dubai World Cup
The Dubai World Cup smooth races were held on March 25 at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai and were won by Ushba Tesoro of Japan. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, presented the trophy to the winning jockey Yug Kawada who also received a US$ 12 million prize.
Japan won the Dubai World Cup for the second time as the rising sun took home the top prize in 2011. Algiers and Emblem Road finished second and third in the evening’s main race in 2023. “I am very proud of my horse and myself for winning the greatest race in the world,” said the winning jockey.
The Group 1 Dubai Turf race with a prize pool of US$ 5 million was won by Lord North, the winner of the Dubai Sheema Classic and winner of US$ 6 million was Equinox, Sibelius was declared the winner of the Dubai Golden Shaheen (US$ 2 million), Derma Sotogake came first in the UAE Derby, Danyah in the US$ 1.5 million Al Quoz Sprint, Isolate was named leader in the Godolphin Mile course (US$ 1 million).
A total of 131 horses from 19 countries participated in the races with a total prize pool of US$ 30.5 million. Four of the nine races on the card had a maximum of 16 entries. Traditionally, there were also contests for the best outfit and the best hat on the day of the race.
