‘House of the Future’ competition kicks off in Dubai
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Institution today launched the ‘House of the Future’ competition, inviting architects and designers from around the world to design an affordable, expandable, innovative and aesthetically pleasing home that meets the modern needs of the Emirates. The cost of constructing a home must not exceed the cost of a AED 1 million mortgage loan.
The ‘House of the Future’ competition invites architects and designers to develop models of smart homes that will stand the test of time and meet the needs of future generations. The competition aims to create unique designs that will raise Dubai’s profile as a global architectural trendsetter. The competition jury is looking for innovative projects that can update the existing housing offerings for Dubai’s citizens and bring them in line with the architectural aesthetic of the country and its residents.
The competition is open for entries from 25 April to September. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in November. The winner of the competition will receive AED 500,000, the runner-up will receive AED 200,000 and the runner-up will receive AED 100,000. The competition will also award AED 200,000 for the best design of a “self-sufficient house” that can do without water and electricity for two consecutive weeks. Architects and designers can submit their work at https://houseofthefuture.ae.
The housing authority will post the winning designs on its website, headquarters and offices, and promote them to Dubai residents, who can choose their favourite design. The initiative is part of the Dubai government’s efforts to provide Dubai citizens with sustainable and comfortable housing and improve their well-being and happiness.
The competition has a detailed set of criteria covering innovation, modern intelligent design, ability to meet the requirements of Emirati families, cost-efficiency and livability.
The ‘House of the Future’ competition’s international partners include Zaha Hadid Architects, Santiago Calatrava – Architects & Engineers, and Buildner.
Members of the competition’s jury include: Abdulredha Abu Alhassan, Executive Director for Rail Planning and Projects Development Department at Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority; Ahmed Bukhash, Chief Architect & Founder of ARCHIDENTITY; Charles Walker, Board Member of Zaha Hadid Architects; and Micael Calatrava, CEO of Calatrava International LLC.
