Sultan Al Neyadi photographs Dubai from ISS
Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi has sent back to Earth a stunning photograph of Dubai’s coastline taken from the International Space Station.
The photo clearly shows the reclaimed islands – The Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and The World Islands – that are the pride of the Emirate. It should be noted that the 42-year-old astronaut has been photographing different regions of the UAE from Earth orbit since his arrival at the ISS on 3 March 2023.
The astronaut noted that he captured a “microcosm of the world” in his latest photo. On the religious holiday of Eid Al Adha, Sultan Al Neyadi took off his spacesuit and donned traditional Emirati garb. He also took along his mascot, a toy named Suhail.
On 28 April 2023, Sultan Al Neyadi became the first Arab to go into outer space. Sultan Al Neyadi’s seven-hour mission was watched by thousands of Arabs and space enthusiasts – it was broadcast live on NASA’s website. The UAE engineer also became the first Muslim to set foot in outer space.
The astronaut is to conduct about 20 experiments commissioned by UAE universities, and is also involved in NASA-assigned research work and station maintenance. The Emirati is due to return to Earth in August 2023.
