Giant Barbie next to Burj Khalifa blows up Internet

Dubai Media Agency has released a video showing a giant Barbie emerging from a pink package next to the Burj Khalifa skyscraper. The video was shot for Instagram and has been viewed more than three million times since it was posted. In the video, the famous Mattel doll is wearing a striped swimming costume and sunglasses, just as she did when the first doll was unveiled in 1959.

Juhi Rupani, creative director of Eye Studio, the company that created the video, says she was overwhelmed by such a positive response and the number of views. Ms Rupani stressed that she had never seen such success of her content on social media.

Ms Rupani also revealed that the Eye Studio team came up with the video during a daily brainstorming session. The project was assigned to Neil Santos, 3D specialist, and Taha Dangervale, Associate Art Director at Eye Studio. The 12-second video took about three days to create, using footage of the Burj Khalifa Tower shot on an iPhone, which was then overlaid with an animated Barbie.

According to the creators, they really wanted to pay homage to the very first Barbie doll model against the backdrop of the Burj Khalifa Tower – one of Dubai’s main landmarks, a popular backdrop for photos and videos, and the tallest building in the world.

The Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie, has already earned more than US$ 500 million, setting a record for weekend box office receipts in 2023. The film premiered in cinemas on 21 July 2023 and will be shown in the UAE on 31 August.
