Passport-free check-in at Dubai Airport

From the end of 2023, passengers at Terminal 3 will be able to travel without a passport, according to Dubai Airport officials. Biometrics and facial recognition systems are increasingly becoming the norm, and showing a passport will soon be a thing of the past.

According to Adel Ahmed Al Redha, chief operating officer of Emirates airline, tentatively as early as November-December this year, travellers flying on Emirates flights will be able to quickly go through check-in and immigration control using smart gates. This means that all passengers will soon be able to do away with the need for passports.

Major General Obaid Muhair bin Suroor, Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Residency and International Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA), revealed that a new system will be launched in November at Dubai Airport Terminal 3, where passengers will be able to go through absolutely all necessary procedures using biometrics.

Mr Al Redha also added that artificial intelligence (AI) will play a key role in gathering information and using data to improve processes, and the Major General stressed that technology will replace the human element in airports, and create new jobs, but in other areas such as monitoring, data analysis and controlling the operational status of systems.

Dubai Airport is known to have been working on this project for several years now, introducing the latest biometric technology to ensure the smooth movement of travellers. Officials have urged airports to share data as quickly as possible to speed up passenger flow.

The number of check-in counters will not increase as airport infrastructure is limited. The only way to solve this problem is smooth operations. The future will have to rely on automation for 90 per cent and human interaction for 10 per cent.
