Two new pedestrian bridges opened in Dubai
Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened two new pedestrian bridges over Ras Al Khor Road. The new bridges for pedestrians and cyclists are equipped with high-precision electromechanical systems, signalling and firefighting technologies, and remote monitoring systems. In addition, the bridges have convenient bike racks.
The first bridge is 174 metres long and connects Creek Harbour and the Ras Al Khor Industrial Zone. The second bridge is 101 metres long and is located directly opposite Marhaba Mall and Wasl Complex in Nadd Al Hamar.
The new facilities are part of the transport authority’s plan announced in June to build seven bridges for pedestrians and cyclists. The main aim of the initiative is to improve road safety in the emirate. Three of the bridges have already been built, with a further four bridges currently under construction.
When building pedestrian bridges, special attention is paid not only to technical equipment with modern systems such as lifts, alarm and fire-fighting systems and remote monitoring systems, but also to aesthetic design.
The locations of pedestrian bridges are chosen taking into account several key parameters, including areas with high concentration of pedestrians and high traffic intensity, distance to the nearest pedestrian crossing, location of public transport stops, markets, commercial centres, public and private institutions.
As previously reported, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the award of a contract for the major reconstruction of Hessa Street. The project will cover a 4.5km stretch from Bin Zayed Highway to Al Khail Road. The modernisation will cost AED689m (US$ 187m).
In addition, the project will also include a 13.5 kilometre-long bicycle lane.
