Dubai Metro announces massive expansion plans
Dubai Metro is expecting a major expansion: the Emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority has invited contractors to express interest in building a new line.
The “blue” line is expected to have 14 stations, both above-ground and underground. It will be connected to the current “green” and “red” lines, and its length will be 30 kilometres.
According to the unveiled plans, 15.5 kilometres will be underground and 14.5 kilometres will be above ground. The project is currently at an early stage and no timeline has been announced. The Metro extension was first reported last year.
According to plans, the “green” branch of the metro will be extended through the Emaar Dubai Harbour area to the Dubai Academic City area, the “red” branch will also be added 3.5 km, eventually the final station will be a large shopping complex Mirdif City Centre.
As previously reported by developer Emaar, the metro station may appear in one of the most promising areas of Dubai called Dubai Hills Estate – it is expected to be located directly in the Dubai Hills Mall.
With a total length of 90 kilometres, Dubai’s automatic metro is one of the easiest and fastest ways to get around the city. The metro in Dubai consists of two lines – “red” (splits into two branches at Jabal Ali station) and “green” – covering all the most important sites and attractions of the city.
“Red” metro line connects Rashidiya station (close to Dubai International Airport) with UAE Exchange station in the Jebel Ali neighbourhood. The line runs along the city’s main thoroughfare – Sheikh Zayed Highway – and covers all major sites and attractions, including the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, The Dubai Mall, Emirates Towers, Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Mall of the Emirates.
At Jabal Ali station, the line diverges – one branch leads to the Expo City area and the other to Ibn Battuta Mall. The “green” branch runs from Etisalat station at Al Twar to the old part of the city at Dubai Creek. This line provides access to the historic Al Fahidi neighbourhood, the Deira district and Dubai’s famous gold and spice markets.
