Bassam Freihi Art Foundation opens new art space
Bassam Freihi Art Foundation has announced the opening of a grand new art space on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi on 24 March 2024. The non-profit organisation, headed by Bassam Freihi, is the first and only private art foundation in the island’s Cultural District.
The foundation has already announced its first exhibition – it is titled “Echoes of the East”. It is worth noting that the foundation organises displays of rare works of art from private collections. Within the framework of the exhibition “Echoes of the East” it will be possible to see female images in art – from odalisques in the harem to images of mothers.
It is planned that the exposition will include both works by 19th century authors, including: Rudolf Ernst, Léon Comerre, Paul Leroy, Jan-Baptiste Huysmans and Fabio Fabbi. Among the Arab modernists, Habib Srour, Mustafa Faroukh, César Jmayel, Tawfiq Tarek, and early works by the renowned Emirati artist Abdul Qader Al Rais will be represented.
The exhibition at the Bassam Freihi Art Foundation will shed light on the complex interplay between reality and fantasy that has historically defined Orientalist art. Not to be overlooked are nineteenth-century photographs from the Orientalist art movement by Gabriel Lekegian, Jean Pascal Sebach, Tancred Dumas and Hippolyte Arnoux.
The Bassam Freihi Art Foundation will be a flagship space that will inspire other collectors to share their masterpieces with the public and contribute to the thriving cultural life in the Middle East region. In the future, the art gallery plans to organise many cultural and educational programmes.
