Etihad Rail tests passenger trains between Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Etihad Rail, the national railway, is testing passenger trains on the section between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The journey from Al Faya area to Al Qudra was attended by Major General Sheikh Ahmed bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Deputy Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces.
The distinguished guest was accompanied by a delegation from the UAE Ministry of Defence, who inspected the operation of the goods trains. Etihad Rail trains have transported more than 7.4 million tonnes of sulphur and more than 2.4 million tonnes of non-metallic materials since the freight railway was launched in February 2023.
The 900km railway has connected all regions of the UAE, as well as 4 seaports and logistics centres with a single network. During construction, 593 bridges were built and six tunnels were tunnelled. The railway tracks also passed through the rocky mountains in Fujairah.
According to previously announced plans, the railway network will eventually connect the UAE to the rest of the Persian Gulf. There are plans to launch passenger services. Passenger trains are expected to travel at 200 kilometres per hour and carry around 400 people at a time.
The passenger railway will connect 11 cities and towns in the UAE and will carry millions of passengers by 2030. The first passenger station will be located on the east coast, in the emirate of Fujairah.
Passengers will be able to get from Fujairah to Abu Dhabi in 100 minutes, from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 50 minutes and from Abu Dhabi to Al Ruwais in 70 minutes. The passenger trains will stop at Al Mirfa, Al Dhaid, Sharjah, Dubai and other cities.
The trains will offer various amenities and entertainment including infotainment systems, charging stations for mobile devices, snacks and beverages, advanced air-conditioning and comfortable seats in first, business and economy class.
