Dubai Municipality to give away prizes to gardeners
Dubai Municipality has announced a competition for the best local agricultural produce, the aim of which is to encourage people to grow fruit and vegetables in their homes and neighbouring plots, using all available space.
According to the authority, this will help the emirate’s residents retain some of their income and generally improve their quality of life. The competition will also contribute to the development of local agriculture and improve food security.
Dubai residents living in flats or those wishing to plant a vegetable garden, such as in an office, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. The prize money will amount to Dh100,000 and will be divided between three winners who will receive Dh50,000, Dh30,000 and Dh20,000 for first, second and third place respectively, as well as commemorative medals. The winners will be announced in May 2024 by Dubai Municipality.
The competition also aims to support the objectives of the National Food Security Strategy and Dubai Food Security Strategy, improve domestic production and reduce food loss and waste. To register, visit https://dm.gov.ae.
Those wishing to enter can fill in a form, provide the personal details of the plot owner, its location and details of the crops grown, irrigation methods, attaching a photo of the garden. The competition is not open to owners of agricultural land.
