Hafeet Rail to link UAE and Oman
The United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman are joining forces to build the Hafeet Rail railway network, which will connect the two states and stretch from Abu Dhabi to Sohar. The cost of the project is estimated at US$ 3bn.
Ahmed Al Musawa Al Hashemi, CEO of Hafeet Rail, said the railway project between the UAE and Oman has already entered the realisation stage. According to him, several tangible steps have been taken, from signing a partnership agreement to awarding major contracts for the project.
The project will bring numerous economic and social benefits as the railways operate with high efficiency and are one of the most environmentally sustainable modes of transport in terms of safety and reliability, he noted.
Ahmed Al Musawa Al Hashemi said that the Hafeet Rail project will serve as a catalyst for the further development of cooperation between the two countries in different economic and industrial sectors.
It will also have a significant impact on the development of tourism and the growth of passenger traffic between the countries. The railway line will stretch from Al Wathba district in the UAE to Sohar Port and will pass through deserts and valleys along the Jebel Hafit mountain range, from which it takes its name.
The project was previously known as the Oman and Etihad Rail Company. It will significantly reduce journey times between the UAE and Omani population centres and will offer both freight and passenger transport options.
