Dubai’s Best Homegrown Produce announces results
A UAE resident has won AED 50,000 after winning first place in Dubai’s Best Homegrown Produce competition. The winner, Dr Sultana Osman Yousef Sulaiman, grows numerous varieties of fruits and vegetables in her home garden using advanced technology.
Dr Sultana’s garden met several requirements, including growing produce using aeroponic systems, which are some of the most advanced agricultural technologies.
The garden also utilises an advanced greenhouse cooling system, a water purification and recycling system, and beneficial bacteria that improves the quality of irrigation water, all of which have contributed to its success.
The garden also features an advanced agricultural drying system and a unique distillation system for aromatic plants.
Dubai’s Best Homegrown Produce competition was launched by the municipality in March as one of the initiatives under the Dubai Farms programme. The main objectives of the initiative are to support citizens who are successfully engaged in agriculture, encourage and develop local production, and improve food security in Dubai.
Out of 109 participants, 12 were finalists in the competition. Naima Mohammed Al Amiri’s garden won second place, receiving a cash award of AED 30,000. The innovative aquaponic system and abundance of plant species made this garden one of the best.
Third place, and a prize of AED 20,000 went to Jamal Abdullah Almuheiri’s garden. Notably, his garden grows azolla, a source of feed for poultry and livestock. Using a gravity hydroponic system, Mr Almuheiri is able to produce high quality dried products while saving energy.
