RTA announces implementation of commercial transport strategy

RTA has announced plans to implement a new commercial land transport and logistics strategy in a bid to double the sectors share of the emirate’s economy to Dh16.8bn (US$4.6bn).

Matar Al Tayer, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of RTA, presented details of the strategy to develop Dubai’s commercial land transport and logistics sector until 2030.

Along with a roadmap and related projects, the strategy was endorsed by the Dubai Executive Council, chaired by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.

The strategy aims to double the contribution of the land transport and logistics sector to the emirate’s economy to Dh16.8bn (US$4.6bn), increase the rate of technology adoption in transport infrastructure by 75 per cent, reduce carbon emissions by 30 per cent and improve the sectors’ operational efficiency by 10 per cent.

“The new strategy is in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The project aims to enhance Dubai’s global competitiveness as a leading financial, business and economic centre and support the implementation of the Dubai Economic Programme (D33), placing Dubai among the top three most economically developed cities in the world. The project aims to identify development and innovation opportunities in the commercial land transport and logistics sector, and ensure that the sector’s objectives, legislation and policies are embedded in ongoing projects and programmes. In addition, it aims to identify promising areas for investment and enhanced partnerships with the private sector,’ Mr Al Tayer said.

He also stated, ‘The Commercial Land Transport and Logistics Sector Strategy was developed in collaboration with strategic partners, businesses, distributors and retailers.’

As part of the strategy, 17 projects have been identified, the realisation of which will drive the sector and business forward, enhancing its competitiveness by tapping into the e-commerce market and digital platforms.

The strategy focuses on utilising data and technology to support the development of high potential companies, working with the commercial land transport sector to operate modern, higher performance vehicles and encouraging the adoption of innovative methods and future technologies.

The list of key areas to be realised through the strategy include:

– Creating digital platforms for the development of the commercial land transport and logistics sector

– Creation of platforms for the transport of heavy goods

– Creation of driver behaviour monitoring systems

– Creation of digital platforms for the after-sales service sector

– Creation of digital platforms for the rental of construction equipment

– Establishment of a road freight data centre

– Renewal of the heavy and light truck fleet.
