New bridge opened in Dubai
A new bridge in Dubai was opened on Sunday, 9 June, dividing traffic from Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to Jumeirah Golf Estate and Dubai Production City.
The new dual carriageway bridge has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour and is part of the Garn Al Sabkha – Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road junction improvement project.
The project, which will see the construction of four bridges, is almost complete. It represents a crucial link, easing traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail and Al Asayel Road.
Once the project is completed, travelling time from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road towards Qusais and Deira will be reduced from 20 minutes to 12 minutes during peak hours.
‘There will also be a 70 per cent reduction in travel time for motorists travelling from Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road towards Al Yalayes Street towards Jebel Ali Port – from 21 minutes to seven,’ said Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the board of executive directors of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
One of the four new bridges at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street has a capacity of 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. It will facilitate traffic between Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed roads.
The second bridge will serve traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street eastwards to Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Street and northwards to Al Qusais and Deira. The capacity of the bridge is 3,200 vehicles per hour.
The third bridge will help ease traffic flow by removing interference for vehicles from Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road travelling north to Al Yalayes Street towards Jebel Ali Port. Its capacity is estimated at 3,200 vehicles per hour.
