Dubai launches the world’s first 3D printed electric abra

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun trial operation of the world’s first electric abra made using 3D printing technology.

The innovative vehicle, which has a traditional design, can carry up to 20 passengers at a time. Thanks to the use of the new technology, the construction period of this type of boat is reduced by 90 per cent, while operation and maintenance costs are reduced by 30 per cent.

In addition, this type of marine transport is environmentally sustainable. The structure created using 3D printing technology is 11 metres long and 3.1 metres wide. It has an electric propulsion system powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries.

The Abra will be operated at Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line at the test base. It has been manufactured by Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi in co-operation with several global companies including Mitsubishi of Japan and Siemens of Germany.

The authority is currently working on a project to modernise the traditional marine transport stations at Dubai Creek Bay, which serve more than 14 million passengers annually. The project includes the modernisation of four traditional stations.
