Dubai Police names main causes of road accidents

In the first six months of 2024, 94 accidents were recorded on Dubai’s motorways, with 80 of them caused by drivers violating lane rules, Dubai Police said.

Thus, Brigadier General Jumaa Salem bin Suwaidan, deputy director of Dubai Police’s General Traffic Directorate, emphasised that drivers make serious mistakes that can lead to catastrophic accidents.

For instance, drivers may believe that the violations are minor, but they can lead to tragic consequences and collisions in which innocent people may be injured.

Violations include dangerous reversing, driving against the flow of traffic, and failing to follow lane rules. Drivers commit these offences when pulling out onto a main road and as a result are responsible for accidents.

While 80 crashes were caused by failure to follow lane rules, the remaining 14 were caused by driving against the flow of traffic. In comparison, 177 road accidents were recorded on the emirate’s highways in 2023.

The Federal Road Traffic and Traffic Regulations Act stipulates a fine of AED 600 and six penalty points for driving against the flow of traffic.

The fine for dangerous reversing is AED 500 (the driver will also receive four penalty points), and the fine for violating the rules for car lanes is also AED 400.
