Blue Moon to rise in UAE skies
On 19 August, residents of the United Arab Emirates will see a beautiful astronomical phenomenon – the first super moon of 2024. In the evening sky it will be possible to observe the so-called Blue Moon.
It is about the maximum convergence of the Earth’s satellite with our planet, thanks to which it seems huge. Thus, during the super moon the Moon looks 7% larger and 16% brighter than in normal full moons.
The August full moon is also called the Sturgeon Moon, because the Native American tribes that lived on the shores of the Great Lakes considered August to be the best time to catch sturgeon.
The full moon in August also marked the beginning of the harvest season in the Northern Hemisphere. Native American names for the August full moon include Corn Moon, Rice Moon, and Cherry Moon. The Anglo-Saxons called it the Grain Moon.
Among the Cree tribes, the full moon in August was called the First Flight Moon because it was the time when chicks were learning to fly. Many peoples also called it the Red Moon because of the reddish hue the moon takes on in the sultry haze of late summer.
The Chinese called the August full moon the Harvest Moon, the Celts called it the Spore Moon, the Wiccans called it the Herbal Moon, and the Cherokees called it the Fruit Moon. In the southern hemisphere, the names Snow Moon, Thunder Moon, Hungry Moon, and Wolf Moon are common.
