World’s largest artificial wave pool to open in Abu Dhabi
The world’s largest artificial wave pool will be opened on Abu Dhabi’s Hudayriat Island in October 2024. The Surf Abu Dhabi project, developed in collaboration with Kelly Slater Wave Co, will feature the world’s largest barrel and the world’s longest surfing ‘slope’.
The artificial wave pool is expected to host major international surfing events and will be available for beginners and professionals alike to train in. Surf Abu Dhabi was part of Modon Properties’ masterplan, which has planned a 51 million square metre development on the island.
The new sports attraction is located next door to the region’s first Velodrome Abu Dhabi, which will open in 2025 and will be a major regional sports centre as well as the capital’s largest park at 2.25 million square metres.
Hudayriat is home to the region’s first UCI Category 1 indoor cycleway. The total length of the cycleway network is 220 kilometres. In addition to Surf Abu Dhabi and Velodrome Abu Dhabi, Hudayriat Island is already a destination for sports enthusiasts, with Trail X, Bike Park and 321 Sports operating here.
Situated opposite Al Bateen Beach, Hudayriyat Island boasts a variety of recreational activities for day and night – from play areas and sports facilities to restaurants and glamping sites.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find football pitches, running and cycling tracks, basketball and tennis courts (including indoor courts), skate parks, an obstacle course and water sports. Hudayriyat Island also boasts one of the most expansive beaches in Abu Dhabi.
Here you can sunbathe on the soft sand, refresh yourself in the azure waters of the bay, enjoy a delicious meal at a restaurant or snack bar, see historical and cultural sights on the Heritage Trail and stay overnight in a luxury marquee.
