Ruler of Dubai launches new national programme

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the Plant the Emirates national programme on Sunday. The initiative aims to develop the agricultural sector, increase the number of green spaces in the country and other measures to protect the environment.

The Dubai ruler stressed that the new programme, which aims to spread the culture of agriculture to all members of society, will continue the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president and founding father of the UAE.

Speaking about the sustainable goals of the initiative, Sheikh Mohammed wrote: ‘The programme aims to improve our food security, develop agricultural technology, create new partnerships with the private sector and spread green spaces in our country to ensure its sustainability.’

‘As part of this programme, the cabinet approved the establishment of the National Agricultural Centre, which will be a major driving force for the sector in the coming period,’ the Dubai ruler added.

The programme, timed to coincide with the ‘Year of Sustainable Development 2024’, also supports the promotion of fresh local agricultural products and their contribution to reducing carbon footprints.

Over the next five years, the programme sets ambitious targets for the country: increasing the number of farms in the country by 20%, increasing the number of organic farms by 25%, introducing climate smart solutions in 30% of farms, reducing agricultural waste by 50%, increasing the use of local agricultural products in UAE restaurants and hotels by 25% and increasing the number of employees in the sector by 15%.

Under a unified vision, crops and agricultural products will be showcased and sold at events, campaigns and exhibitions. Volunteer programmes and competitions will be organised for students and residents.
