Arab world welcomes Al Wasm season
The long-awaited cool Al Wasm season, also known as the second phase of autumn, begins in the United Arab Emirates. The comfort season, which replaces the heat and hot weather, will last from 16 October to 6 December.
Thus, from 7 December onwards, winter will begin in the UAE. The Al Wasm season is characterised by moderate air temperatures, which can even be cool at night. It is also characterised by increased agricultural activity.
During this period, the rains known as ‘Wasam’ begin, which the ancient Bedouins used to fill water wells for plant growth. Al Wasm is also referred to as the season of ‘water and dew’ as well as the ‘first spring’.
The rains stimulate the growth of wild and desert plants, as well as grass in cattle pastures. If the rains fall early and periodically enough during this period, the ground becomes fertile, allowing wild plants, including flowers and seasonal grasses, to grow.
Their life cycle is usually about 4-6 months and they can produce seeds the following season. In autumn, temperatures range from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius, but can drop as low as 10 degrees.
The Al Wasm season is favourable for fishing in the sea and is also associated with the appearance of migratory birds. During this time, Emiratis are advised to prepare in advance for changes in the weather, including rain and dust storms, as well as to be extra vigilant on the roads due to the formation of fog.
