UAE residents to enjoy many celestial phenomena in 2025
In 2025, residents of the United Arab Emirates will be able to enjoy a host of spectacular astronomical events that will make the night sky truly magical. This year, both the annual meteor showers and a rare total lunar eclipse are expected, which will be a real treat for astronomy enthusiasts.
Among the expected meteor showers are the Quadrantids, which will be visible from 26 December, peaking on 3 and 4 January. These meteors, originating from asteroid 2003 EH1, are known for their bright fireballs. In August, the Perseid stream is expected to be particularly spectacular, offering the chance to see up to 100 meteors per hour. The Orionids and Leonids will follow in October and November, and the year will be rounded off by the Geminids, which will peak on 13 and 14 December.
One of the most anticipated events will be the total lunar eclipse on September 7, when the Moon will pass through the Earth’s shadow, turning a deep red colour. This rare astronomical phenomenon will be a great observing opportunity and the Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) is planning to organise an event for everyone to enjoy the spectacle.
Three super moons are also expected in 2025: the Hunter Moon on 7 October, the Beaver Moon on 5 November and the Cold Moon on 4 December. These events will allow you to observe the Moon, which will appear larger and brighter than usual.
Equally interesting will be the parade of planets on 11 January, when Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus and Saturn line up in the evening sky. While Uranus and Neptune may not be visible without a telescope, the other planets will be visible to the naked eye. The oppositions of Mars on 16 January, Saturn on 21 September and Jupiter on 7 December are also expected, providing ideal opportunities to observe these planets.
