Abu Dhabi starts testing autonomous shuttles

Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City neighbourhood has begun testing autonomous shuttles. The electric vehicle being tested is equipped with advanced LIDAR sensors and software that allows it to move and avoid obstacles without human intervention.

It is learnt that vehicles developed by several global brands at once will be tested. As a result, Masdar City is set to deploy a fleet of seven advanced autonomous shuttles that will ensure zero carbon footprint.

‘The Mobility Cluster’ within the Masdar City area serves as a testing ground for sustainable and autonomous urban mobility solutions, as well as a centre for the promotion of smart transport in general, adapted to operate in the Middle East.

In December 2024, a new service was launched in Abu Dhabi, allowing passengers to book rides in Uber cars without a driver. This has been made possible through Uber’s partnership with WeRide.

In the first phase, the service is available in several areas including Saadiyat Island, Yas Island and routes to or from Zayed International Airport. Uber app users can activate Ride Preferences in settings to increase the chances of getting a WeRide car when ordering UberX or Uber Comfort services. This innovation breaks new ground for passengers who want to experience autonomous rides.

Initially, an operator is in each vehicle to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians. This temporary solution will pave the way for the full commercial launch of driverless services, which is scheduled for 2025.
