UAE Cabinet creates council to fight drug crime

The Cabinet of the United Arab Emirates has announced the establishment of a council to combat drug trafficking. The move is part of an effort to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against drug-related crime and substance abuse.

“Drugs are the scourge of our era, a cancer of society and an epidemic that targets our dearest, our youth. It is the patriotic duty of every parent and every responsible person,” His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, said of the decision.

He said the solidarity of government and educational institutions, security agencies and families will help fight the scourge. Lt. Gen. Shaikh Shaikh Zayed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy prime minister and UAE interior minister, will head the Anti Narcotics Council.

The main objectives of the new body are to strengthen co-operation between federal ministries and local authorities and security agencies in the fight against drug-related crime.

The focus will be on early detection of drug addiction, provision of appropriate medical and psychological treatment and rehabilitation programmes to reintegrate drug addicts into society.

The government also approved the national strategy for sports till 2031. It will cover 71 per cent of the population, including professional and aspiring athletes, and encourage UAE residents to lead an active lifestyle.

“Sport is the best alternative for our youth, it is the health shield of our society and it is a way to raise the flag of our country in many international forums,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid. The initiative will aim to improve physical education programmes in schools, develop sports federations and improve sports legislation.
