UAE leaders issue Eid Al Adha greetings

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, exchanged congratulations on the religious festival of Eid al Adha with the leaders of Arab countries, including Oman, Bahrain and Jordan.

The leaders exchanged wishes for good health and happiness on the blessed occasion and also expressed their common desire for maintaining peace and stability in Arab and Muslim countries and the world at large.

For his part, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, conveyed warm wishes of happiness and security to “all Arabs and Muslims”.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, addressed the Hajj pilgrims and wished God to accept their good deeds and congratulated the UAE leadership and all the people on the holiday.

Eid al Adha is one of the two major Muslim holidays. It is also known as the holiday of completion of Hajj. On this day, Muslims remember the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, go to mosques and give alms to the poor and hungry.

This is one of the main religious celebrations, reminding Muslims of man’s devotion to God and the mercy of the Almighty. Eid al Adha is celebrated 70 days after Eid al Fitr, on the tenth day of the Muslim month of Zul Hijjah. Unlike many other dates, Eid Al Adha is celebrated over several consecutive days.

The traditions of the holiday are inextricably linked to the basic rules of Islam. Its key part is the sacrifice. After the festival prayer, the believers slaughter a ram (or camel, cow, buffalo or goat). One should not display any aggression while slaughtering an animal.

It is customary to give one third of the slaughtered animals to poor people or orphanages, one third to guests and relatives, and one third to the family. On this day it is customary to visit loved ones and pray for the dead. Believers should also give alms.
