Mission: Impossible stars share secrets from filming in Abu Dhabi
The director and actors of the Mission: Impossible franchise have told about the filming of the movie in the Abu Dhabi airport terminal, which is currently under construction. It was filmed in the middle of a pandemic and was complicated by covid restrictions. In spite of that, the filmmakers decided that it was possible to continue filming in the Emirate and take all necessary precautions to ensure an epidemiological safety.
Key scenes were shot in the Liwa Desert and Abu Dhabi Airport’s Midfield Terminal. The world’s most advanced international terminal was still under construction at the time of filming in 2021. The film crews had the unique task of making it look like a fully operational, busy airport.
And they succeeded: the terminal with its huge chandeliers, curved ceiling beams and lattice walls was presented to the audience in all its glory. A host of supporting actors, around 150 people, were involved in the filming, not counting the main crew.
This is not the first time the franchise has been filmed in the UAE. The first film in the series to be shot in the UAE was Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which was released in 2011. On the set, Tom Cruise climbed the peak of the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai – without any insurance and wrote his wife Katie Holmes’ name on the spire.
Tom Cruise later visited Abu Dhabi once more to film a scene in 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout. This time, the actor did a Halo jump over the dunes.
The premiere of ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” took place in the UAE capital in June 2023. Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff and Christopher McQuarrie were on the red carpet.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is out in UAE cinemas on July 9, three days before its US and global rollout on July 12.
