Dubai Police train prisoners in culinary skills
Dubai Police has launched an initiative to train prisoners in new professional skills. Inmates will be able to learn the art of cooking and the basics of working in restaurants. The main aim is to enable prisoners to easily and quickly integrate into society upon release.
At the moment, about 30 men and women of different nationalities are being trained in the initiative, which was launched two months ago. Communication is tailored to the linguistic characteristics of each prisoner. At the end of the course, each prisoner will be given a certificate that will enable him or her to get a job in the restaurants participating in the programme. Interestingly, a book with recipes of dishes mastered by the prisoners during the training has already been published.
As it became known, the classes are held in several stages, from theory to practice. The training materials include mandatory knowledge on health, safety and hygiene, as well as practical lessons on safe handling of cutting tools. The main objective is to ensure the well-being of all those involved in the process.
At a press briefing on the ‘Culinary Initiative for Prisoners’, Dubai Police officials said the project is only part of a series of activities. Apart from catering, there are other programmes for prisoners. For example, sports activities in co-operation with the Dubai Sports Council.
The introduction of the initiative provides real support for prisoners and aims to create a tolerant and prosperous society.
