Ecosculptures by UAE students to decorate Yas Island

Four students from Dubai and Sharjah have won an environmental art competition Yas Design Contest. The impressive works will soon grace Yas Island.

Miral, in partnership with Aldar and Creative Lab under the guidance of Creative Media Authority, organised the Yas Design Contest. The main objective of the project was to unlock the creative talents of UAE university students and create unique installations for Yas Island.

The competition attracted more than 26 entries from award applicants from across the country. The projects should serve as a backdrop for original photographs and tell the story of the Emirates. One of the main conditions was the partial or full use of eco-friendly materials.

After careful evaluation and open voting, the trio of Indian students Arfa Abdul Azeem, Shifa Asif and Gopika Retikumar from Amity University Dubai, and Egyptian student Radwa Elkasas from Sharjah Performing Arts Academy were recognised as the winners of the competition.

Harfa, Shifa and Gopika won with a work entitled Habat Al-Lulu, inspired by the rich history of the UAE and related to pearl fishing. Radwa was recognised for her work titled Evolving, a photo booth with three panels depicting the country’s past, present and future.

The winners will receive a cash prize of AED 5,000 and their designs will be realised and placed on Yas Island, serving as a unique photo backdrop for residents and visitors to the emirate.

According to the winners, they are grateful to the organisers of the competition for the opportunity to not only bring their creative ideas to life, but also to show their love for the UAE.

The creators of the competition heartily congratulated the students on their victory and said they look forward to seeing their designs on Yas Island, where thousands of residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the installations.
