Mother Teresa Award goes to UAE philanthropist
This year’s Mother Teresa International Awards 2023 recognised the achievements of 18 outstanding individuals from around the world. UAE resident philanthropist Ahmed Al Falasi won first place for his contribution to social action. The winner was recognised for his humanitarian assistance in establishing state-of-the-art dialysis centres in the city of Mombasa in Kenya.
Two respected UAE residents, Sheikh Ahmed bin Faisal Al Qassimi and British artist Sacha Jafri, also joined the list of honourees. Both were honoured in the Culture category. The award ceremony was held at Dubai’s Conrad Hotel on 26 August, the 113th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa, a Catholic nun and missionary.
The ceremony was organised by Anthony Arun Biswas and the All-India Minority and Weaker Sections Council, a non-political organisation founded by Prafulla Chandra Sen, former chief minister of West Bengal.
Notably, this is not the first time the award ceremony has been held outside India. After the demise of St Teresa in 1997, the Council set up the International Mother Teresa and Millennium Award Committee. This committee was entrusted with the task of honouring annually outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves in the fields of education, science, culture, sports, social work, medicine, industry and politics.
It is worth recalling that Mother Teresa, who was made a saint by Pope John Paul II, was born on 26 August 1910. She founded the humanitarian organisation “Missionaries of Charity”, which included more than 4,500 nuns working in 133 countries. Her work was aimed at helping the most disadvantaged people, for which she was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and the Nobel Prize.
