Police Genomic Centre launched in Dubai
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, inaugurated the Genomic Centre at the Dubai Police General Forensic and Criminology Department on September 13.
The Genomic Centre is designed to assist police officers with the most advanced technologies, tests and research in forensic identification, genetics and metagenomics. The project is in line with the UAE’s National Strategy to make the country a centre of research and innovation in genomics, and will help bring Dubai Police to the forefront of law enforcement agencies around the world.
The organisational structure of the centre consists of four main sections: Human Genome, Metagenomics, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. The Human Genome Section is responsible for analysing samples to determine the genetic origins of individuals and molecular studies of autopsies. The Metagenome Section specialises in the study of non-human specimens to identify their species or strains. The bioinformatics and biotechnology departments are involved in the use of artificial intelligence to perform statistical analyses based on genomic data.
In addition, Dubai Police has successfully implemented a forensic entomology project. The project team can obtain crucial forensic results in less than 24 hours. This sets a new global standard, surpassing the average forensic examination times, ranging from 3 to 14 days, observed around the world.
Another innovation is the use of the “Brainprint” system developed by Dubai Police, which shows excellent results in crime investigations. This state-of-the-art system uses a special device to measure the brainwave activity of suspects when they are shown images related to a crime scene. The system provides accurate information about the suspect’s memories, thereby speeding up the process of closing a case several times.
