Dubai hosts Biennale of Calligraphy
The Dubai Biennale of Calligraphy will be held throughout October, with more than 200 Arab and international calligraphers and artists taking part in the event.
The Biennale includes 19 exhibitions in 35 art venues showcasing traditional and contemporary calligraphy and typography in eight different languages.
As part of the Biennale, the Etihad Museum hosts the 11th Dubai International Exhibition of Arabic Calligraphy, which features over 75 works by 50 calligraphers from 17 nationalities.
The Biennale embodies the Emirate’s commitment to develop the art of calligraphy, to reveal its deep artistic spirit to the world, and to preserve it as a pillar of national identity by celebrating the beauty, diversity and richness of the Arabic language and culture.
Guests will be treated to a collection of masterpieces of art created in collaboration with respected museums and collectors in the region. It features prominent artists and calligraphers Munir Al Sharani from Syria, Rashid Butt from Pakistan, Fatima Ozkay and Mohammed Al Tamimi from Turkey, Omid Rabbani from Iran, Palestinian Ihab Thabet and others as guests of honour.
The exhibition demonstrates the plasticity of traditional Arabic ligature and the stylistic diversity of contemporary innovative interpretations, revealing the close relationship between writing and visual art. Each artist brings a unique touch, emphasising the depth of Arabic calligraphy.
