Rainforests to be planted at Al Maktoum International Airport

Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), which will become the world’s largest, will be planted with rainforests, landscaped green areas and a monorail railway. The face of the new terminal was shown to the public during the Airport Show in Dubai.

Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), which is designing the passenger terminal, said that one of the striking features of DWC will be an elevated railway system or automated people mover.

Passengers travelling between terminals will cross rainforests. In addition, the air harbour will have giant LED screens that will project various landscapes and marine habitats.

DWC will combine regional tradition, culture and innovation in its design. The new airport will be accessed by multi-level motorways. It will also be connected to the Etihad Rail high-speed railway and a metro line.

The new terminal will be served by air taxis and autonomous vehicles. Passengers will be able to relax in tropical gardens while waiting for their flights. DWC will have a total of 400 gates and five parallel runways.

Large spaces will be set aside for shops, restaurants, recreation and entertainment areas. First and business class lounges will be located on the upper level, and gates will be located along the piers, providing unobstructed access to the aircraft via multiple boarding ramps.

Once completed, DWC will be five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport (DXB). The new airport will also use state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to help avoid queues. DWC will serve around 260 million passengers and handle 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.
