Dubai foils attempt to smuggle tonne of drugs into the country
According to the Dubai Customs Service, the agency, using modern customs systems, foiled a large-scale attempt to smuggle drugs, in particular the drug Pregabalin.
The narcotic substances, weighing 1 tonne 100 kilograms, were hidden in 40 barrels among incoming air cargo.
The incident occurred after the barrels arrived at the cargo terminal, where customs officers checked the documents and matched them to the cargo. After investigation, it was learnt that the seized substance was on the list of controlled drugs in the UAE.
The Dubai Police’s General Anti-Narcotics Department was immediately notified and legal proceedings against the suspects were initiated in the presence of the authorities.
It is worth recalling that a fortnight ago, Sharjah police detained members of an international gang who were trying to smuggle 226kg of hashish, psychotropic pills and other narcotic drugs into the country.
The three Asian nationals planned to smuggle and sell the illegal substances into the UAE by hiding them in slabs of marble.
Colonel Majid Sultan Al Assam, director of Sharjah Police’s Anti-Drugs Unit, said information about the existence of the gang, whose operations were run by dealers outside the country, helped lead them to the group.
Over the past year, Dubai Customs prevented 1,273 attempts to import narcotic and psychotropic substances into the country. Using the latest technology, Dubai authorities are on the lookout for public welfare.
