UAE athletes complete incredible walk

Ten athletes from Abu Dhabi travelled 1,000 kilometres across the desert, showing incredible will and team spirit. Their journey started in Al Sila and ended in Al Wathba, with the route taking them through the Liwa Desert.

For 30 days, the participants not only battled high temperatures reaching 45℃, but also enjoyed the wildlife. They observed rare animals such as the Arabian oryx and the barchan cat, and interacted with local people.

The Walk1000 initiative, organised by Active Abu Dhabi, Pure Health and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, aims to inspire the local community to lead an active lifestyle. Walkers also shared their experiences with wildlife, emphasising the importance of respecting it. Researcher Khalifa Al Mazroui noted that even many snakes are not a threat if approached with caution.

Despite the physical and mental challenges during the trek, the athletes found joy in socialising with each other. ‘We didn’t have time to get bored, everyone became friends and supported each other,’ shares Tarek Ahmad, one of the participants.

Social interactions were an important part of their journey. ‘We met many kind people who offered us food and drinks,’ says Daniel Tesfaye, another expedition participant.

Just five days after completing the trek, four Walk1000 participants ran the full Abu Dhabi Marathon, a testament to their fitness and fortitude. This expedition not only strengthened their fitness, but also provided unforgettable experiences and new acquaintances, inspiring many to adopt an active lifestyle.
