Abu Dhabi Doctors Achieve Medical Milestone with Pioneering Robotic Cancer Surgery

In a significant advancement for the United Arab Emirates’ healthcare sector, surgeons at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi have successfully performed the country’s first robotic cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to treat a rare appendix tumor. This complex procedure marks a notable achievement in minimally invasive cancer care and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s commitment to establishing itself as a global hub for cutting-edge medical innovation.

The patient, a 48-year-old woman, initially presented to the clinic with symptoms mimicking acute appendicitis. Following a standard appendectomy, surgeons discovered concerning gelatinous deposits within her abdominal cavity. Subsequent pathological analysis confirmed the presence of a low-grade appendiceal neoplasm, a rare tumor known for its potential to cause a severe condition called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), which can lead to significant abdominal complications.

Appendiceal tumors are exceptionally uncommon, accounting for less than 1% of all malignant cancers globally and found in only about 1.4% of patients undergoing appendectomies. This rarity underscores the complexity of the case.

The intricate surgery was led by Dr. Yasir Akmal, a US-trained surgical oncologist at the hospital’s Digestive Disease Institute, supported by a multidisciplinary team. Utilizing advanced robotic technology, the surgeons meticulously performed the cytoreductive procedure to remove all visible tumor tissue. Immediately following this, they administered HIPEC. This specialized treatment involves circulating chemotherapy medication, heated to approximately 42°C (107.6°F), throughout the abdominal cavity for 90 minutes. The heat enhances the chemotherapy’s effectiveness in destroying any remaining microscopic cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissues.

Dr. Georges-Pascal Haber, Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, highlighted the importance of such technological advancements, stating that the integration of modern robotic techniques is instrumental in refining surgical approaches and ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Dr. Akmal attributed the successful outcome to the critical combination of timely diagnosis, the adoption of innovative surgical methods like robotic HIPEC, and seamless teamwork within the multidisciplinary unit. He emphasized that this coordinated approach was vital in halting the disease’s progression and delivering effective treatment for this rare condition.

This landmark surgery represents a substantial leap forward in Abu Dhabi’s surgical oncology capabilities, demonstrating the emirate’s growing capacity to offer world-class, complex cancer care using the latest robotic and therapeutic technologies.
