Khalifa University Tops UAE Rankings for Eighth Year
Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa University of Science and Technology has solidified its position as the United Arab Emirates’ leading higher education institution, climbing 25 places to rank 177th globally in the newly released QS World University Rankings 2026. This marks the eighth consecutive year Khalifa University has held the top spot within the UAE, according to the prestigious rankings published on June 19th.
The university’s ascent is driven by strong performance across key metrics, notably achieving an impressive 11th place globally for the international diversity of its faculty members, highlighting its commitment to a multinational academic environment.
The 2026 QS rankings evaluated over 1,500 universities worldwide, and the UAE saw several of its institutions rise significantly. The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) secured second place nationally, making a substantial leap from 261st to 229th place globally. The American University of Sharjah (AUS) claimed third place within the UAE and climbed from 332nd to 272nd globally. AUS also earned distinction as the top UAE university for employer reputation and the international diversity of its student body.
Regionally across the Arab world, the rankings indicate positive momentum. QS reports that approximately 42% of institutions improved their positions compared to last year, while 32% maintained their standing, and 26% experienced a decline. This edition also welcomed eleven debutant universities, with Jordan contributing six new entries and Iraq adding five. Lebanon and Oman each saw three universities enter the rankings for the first time, Saudi Arabia introduced two new institutions, and Palestine had one debutant.
Saudi Arabia further demonstrated regional strength, with three of its universities now ranked within the global top 500. This brings the total number of top-500 institutions in the Arab region to nineteen, according to QS.
Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its position at number one. Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and University College London all maintained their places within the top ten, while Harvard University secured fifth place. The continued prominence of US and UK institutions underscores the competitive nature of the global higher education landscape, even as universities in the UAE and the wider Arab region show notable progress. Khalifa University’s sustained emirate-level leadership and significant global climb exemplify the UAE’s ongoing investment and ambition within higher education.
