UAE Ranks Among Top 7 Global Leaders in Tourist Spending

The United Arab Emirates has secured a position among the world’s top seven countries for international tourist expenditure, according to a new report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced this achievement via social media platform X. He stated that this recognition underscores the strength and diversification of the nation’s economy.

“The total spending by international tourists in 2024 exceeded 217 billion dirhams (approximately US$ 59 billion), while domestic tourists spent an additional 57 billion dirhams (US$ 15.5 billion),” Sheikh Mohammed emphasized.

He highlighted that the UAE has surpassed countries with centuries-old tourism traditions in this area. “We welcome tourists and investors, are open to highly skilled talent, and are creating the best environment for living and traveling,” he added.

The WTTC report forecasts that the travel and tourism sector’s contribution to the UAE’s economy will reach around 267.5 billion dirhams (US$ 72.8 billion) in 2025, accounting for nearly 13% of the country’s GDP.

Furthermore, the sector is expected to employ over 925,000 people – an increase of 26,000 jobs compared to the previous year.

Domestic tourism is also showing robust growth. Spending by local tourists is projected to reach 60 billion dirhams (US$ 16.3 billion) in 2025, representing a 47% increase compared to 2019 levels.

Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, commended the UAE, noting that the nation continues to set global standards in tourism. She attributed this success to its “high-tech cities, developed infrastructure, hospitality, and efficient visa system.”
