Abu Dhabi Completes Landmark First Drone Delivery in Pilot Project
Abu Dhabi has successfully conducted its first-ever drone delivery of a package, marking a significant milestone in the emirate’s push towards smart and autonomous logistics. The pilot project operation took place in Khalifa City, demonstrating the potential for integrating unmanned aerial systems into the city’s transportation infrastructure.
The drone transported a simulated package from a local post office to a designated landing zone, showcasing the feasibility of using autonomous aerial vehicles for urban deliveries. The test flight was executed by logistics companies LODD and 7X, with support from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).
Humaid Saber Al Hameli, Head of the Integrated Transport Centre Department, emphasized that airspace safety remains paramount. He highlighted the project as a key example of collaboration between public and private sectors, calling it an important step towards a future of smart air mobility within the emirate.
This initiative forms part of a broader development strategy led by the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry Committee (SASC), supported by ADIO’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster. Regulatory oversight for such operations is provided by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Integrated Transport Centre.
Omran Malik, Head of the SAVI cluster, stated that the pilot demonstrates promising strategies expected to deliver long-term economic and infrastructure benefits to Abu Dhabi. He emphasized ADIO’s commitment to developing advanced logistics technologies that reinforce the city’s status as a global innovation hub.
The delivery test is part of a wider program exploring the integration of drones into the city’s logistics network. LODD and 7X have expressed their intention to continue working closely with regulators to refine procedures and prepare for the scaled-up use of unmanned drones for cargo deliveries.
LODD’s General Director, Rashid Al Manai, noted that autonomous drones offer significant potential to enhance the efficiency of urban delivery networks through scalability and rapid response times. Tariq Al Wahedi, Head of the 7X Group, added that adopting such technologies expands the capabilities of the national logistics system and fosters the development of future-ready infrastructure.
