Dubai’s Al Safa Street Set for Major Transformation

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled ambitious plans for a comprehensive upgrade of Al Safa Street, a key artery in the city’s bustling network. This significant infrastructure project, forming part of a broader initiative to enhance connectivity across several vital corridors, promises to dramatically reduce travel times, boost road capacity, and improve the overall urban environment for residents and visitors.

The focal point of this specific phase is a 1,500-meter stretch of Al Safa Street, running from its intersection with the crucial Sheikh Zayed Road all the way to its junction with Al Wasl Street. Currently a potential bottleneck, the RTA forecasts that the upgrades will slash travel time along this segment from approximately 12 minutes down to a mere 3 minutes – a 75% reduction that promises significant relief for daily commuters.

Central to the upgrade is a substantial expansion of the road itself. A new fourth lane will be added in each direction, directly addressing congestion. Recognizing the need for multi-modal transport, the project also integrates dedicated pedestrian sidewalks and bicycle lanes, prioritizing safety and accessibility for non-motorists alongside vehicle traffic.

The engineering complexity involves constructing two major bridges and two lengthy tunnels, totalling over 3,000 meters in combined length. These structures are designed to efficiently manage traffic flow at critical interchanges:

• Bridge 1 (1,005 meters):Connecting Al Wasl Street to Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street. This bridge is designed to handle a substantial 6,400 vehicles per hour.
• Bridge 2 (360 meters):Facilitating movement from Al Satwa Road towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street, with a capacity of 2,800 vehicles per hour.
• Tunnel 1 (1,005 meters):Providing a direct link from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Wasl Street, accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour.
• Tunnel 2 (750 meters):Passing beneath the intersection of Al Wasl and Al Safa streets, boasting a high capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour.

Collectively, these new structures are expected to double the road’s capacity, increasing it from 6,000 vehicles per hour to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

This Al Safa Street project is not isolated. It falls under a much larger, multi-faceted infrastructure program announced by the RTA on June 3rd, targeting improvements along Umm Suqeim, Al Safa, and Al Wasl streets. That overarching initiative involves modernizing six major intersections, constructing five tunnels totalling nearly 3,850 meters, and expanding roads to three lanes in each direction over a total length of about 15 kilometers. The ultimate goals are similarly transformative: increasing capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour and halving journey times across the entire corridor.

Beyond just moving cars faster, the wider project, including the Al Safa segment, emphasizes enhancing the public realm. Plans include creating dedicated pedestrian zones, expanding cycling networks, and developing public spaces. This holistic approach underscores Dubai’s commitment not only to efficient transportation but also to improving the quality of life and urban experience for everyone navigating its dynamic streets.
