UAE Advances Eco-Friendly Rainmaking Technology

The United Arab Emirates has showcased significant progress in developing environmentally responsible cloud seeding technologies to enhance rainfall. During the latest session of its Rain Enhancement Hub webinar series, the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) highlighted global achievements in sustainable precipitation enhancement.

A key focus was research led by Thai scientist Dr. Siripen Somsri from the Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation Department. Dr. Somsri presented findings on natural alternatives to silver iodide, the traditional agent used in cloud seeding. Her work concentrates on identifying environmentally friendly substances with potent ice-forming capabilities. These materials aim to support more sustainable weather modification practices while minimizing ecological harm.

Facing water scarcity challenges, the UAE has actively pursued methods to reduce reliance on conventional water resources and expand rainfall enhancement capabilities using modern technology. Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the UAE’s National Center of Meteorology and President of the World Meteorological Organization, emphasized the critical importance of advancing new rainfall enhancement techniques for long-term water security and environmental protection. He stressed that such initiatives foster valuable international platforms for knowledge sharing and scientific research.

UAEREP Head Alya Al Mazroui underscored the program’s commitment to eco-friendly solutions and acknowledged Dr. Somsri’s significant contributions. She noted that the webinar series actively promotes scientific advancement and the practical application of innovative cloud seeding methods.

Ongoing research under the UAEREP program includes developing novel materials, with nanotechnology playing a prominent role. For example, a team led by Professor Linda Zou from Australia has created eco-friendly materials based on sodium chloride (NaCl) and titanium dioxide (TiO2). These nanomaterials, already being utilized in operational settings, demonstrate high effectiveness across diverse atmospheric conditions. Dr. Somsri’s team is also exploring natural options like aluminum foil and salts to enhance ice nucleation efficiency. The UAE continues to drive international collaboration to refine these promising, sustainable approaches to water security.
