UAE Set to Launch Drone Delivery Services for Groceries

Major hypermarket operators and express delivery services in the United Arab Emirates are exploring the transition to drone delivery systems. Retail giant Lulu has already initiated a feasibility study to launch unmanned aerial vehicle deliveries in Dubai.

Commercial operations will require approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Similar plans are under consideration by another major retail chain and leading e-commerce players, though no official confirmations have been released by companies yet.

The new technology promises to accelerate delivery times and expand service coverage areas. Last December, Chinese company Keeta Drone became the first firm to receive a BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) license in the UAE, permitting deliveries beyond the operator’s visual range.

Currently, Keeta drones operate in Dubai Silicon Oasis with a coverage radius of 2.9 kilometers, charging 9.5 dirhams per delivery. The company has announced it is collaborating with the Dubai government to study potential service area expansions.

Previously, Aramex had also tested drones and robots for deliveries in the UAE. In Abu Dhabi, company LODD partnered with 7X and with support from Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) conducted the first autonomous drone flight for parcel delivery in Khalifa City using a cable descent system for package lowering.

The q-commerce segment (15-30 minute delivery) has become a significant part of the UAE’s e-commerce landscape. Drone technology could substantially reduce costs and accelerate deliveries in congested urban areas.
