How AI is reshaping travel across the Middle East

Artificial intelligence is moving from a travel-industry buzzword into a practical tool that could fundamentally change how people search, book and manage their journeys.

For the Middle East, where airlines continue to expand rapidly and invest heavily in digital services, the region is becoming an important testing ground for the next generation of AI-powered travel technology.

According to Maher Koubaa, Executive Vice President of the Travel Unit and Managing Director EMEA at Amadeus IT Group, the biggest changes over the next three to five years are likely to appear first in trip planning, booking and disruption management.

Travel search is becoming conversational

One of the clearest changes will be the way travellers search for flights and holidays.

Instead of relying only on traditional search boxes, filters and fixed criteria, passengers will increasingly be able to describe what they want in natural language.

A traveller could explain the type of trip they are planning, their budget, preferred timing and personal priorities, and receive options based on that context.

This represents a shift from searching through hundreds of combinations manually to interacting with travel platforms more like a conversation.

AI will increasingly interpret intent rather than simply process filters.

AI agents could handle bookings and changes

The next major step is agentic AI — systems that can do more than answer questions.

Rather than functioning as basic chatbots, AI agents could eventually complete certain tasks on behalf of travellers within rules defined by airlines.

For example, an AI assistant could identify a passenger’s booking, find alternative flights, explain fare differences, help process a change and initiate payment.

The same technology could be particularly useful during delays and cancellations.

Airlines often need to communicate with thousands of passengers simultaneously during major disruptions. AI could help provide personalised alternatives at scale while directing complicated or sensitive cases to human employees.

The Middle East could become a major AI testing ground

Middle Eastern airlines are in a strong position to experiment with these technologies because many carriers in the region are simultaneously expanding fleets, destinations and digital infrastructure.

Customer experience is also a major competitive factor for Gulf airlines.

That creates an opportunity to introduce AI across different stages of the journey, from inspiration and booking to airport services and post-trip communication.

However, Koubaa says technology alone will not be enough.

The effectiveness of AI depends heavily on the quality of the systems and data supporting it.

Personalisation remains difficult

Airlines have talked about creating highly personalised offers for years, but delivering them consistently remains challenging.

One of the biggest obstacles is fragmented customer data.

Information about one traveller may be spread across multiple systems, including loyalty programmes, customer relationship management platforms, booking systems and digital channels.

Without combining that information into a reliable view of the customer, airlines struggle to provide genuinely relevant offers.

The complexity can become significant.

Amadeus highlighted an example where an airline would have needed around 17,000 individual rules to manually match different products with customer segments.

AI and machine learning could simplify that process by analysing information in real time and suggesting more relevant products or actions.

Could AI book an entire holiday for you?

In the longer term, travellers may increasingly delegate significant parts of trip planning to AI.

Instead of separately searching for flights, hotels, transport and activities, someone could ask an AI assistant to organise an entire journey around a set of preferences.

The system could compare options, recommend combinations and eventually help complete the booking.

But this transition is expected to happen gradually.

Travellers are already using AI for inspiration and planning, but relatively few are currently comfortable allowing it to control most of the booking process.

Trust, reliability and the ability to remain in control will therefore remain critical.

Airlines and booking platforms will need to adapt

The rise of conversational AI could also change how travellers interact with airlines and online travel agencies.

If customers increasingly begin their journeys through an AI assistant, airlines will need to make sure their flights, prices and additional services can be discovered and booked through these new interfaces.

At the same time, carriers will want to protect their direct relationships with customers and maintain control over pricing and brand experience.

Online travel agencies will face a similar challenge.

Their value may increasingly depend on how effectively they can operate within a world where the interface is conversational rather than built around traditional websites and search results.

Underlying travel technology platforms will still remain essential because AI systems need access to accurate, real-time availability, pricing, payment and booking infrastructure.

AI may become the interface, but the travel ecosystem behind it still needs to execute every transaction securely.

Younger travellers expect more personal experiences

The shift is being accelerated by younger, digitally native travellers.

They are accustomed to online services that understand context, reduce friction and respond immediately.

As a result, they are becoming less tolerant of generic offers, complicated processes and static information.

For airlines, hotels and destinations, this means personalisation needs to go beyond simply adding an upgrade or promoting the same package to everyone.

A traveller may expect an offer built around the specific purpose of their trip, their budget, schedule, preferences and even their risk profile.

AI could help travel companies understand these factors and create more relevant packages.

AI could also improve airline efficiency

Artificial intelligence is not only being developed for customer-facing services.

Airlines can also use advanced analytics to improve operational decision-making.

AI systems can help monitor performance, analyse different scenarios and recommend actions across areas including capacity planning, disruption management and operational control.

Commercial teams can use similar technology to understand demand signals and decide which routes should be promoted.
