Alex Eala becomes Southeast Asia’s highest-ranked female tennis player
Filipina tennis star Alex Eala has made history, reaching World No. 18 in the WTA rankings and becoming the highest-ranked Southeast Asian woman in tennis history.
At just 21, Eala has surpassed the previous regional record of No. 19, previously held by Indonesia’s Yayuk Basuki and Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn.
The achievement marks another major milestone in what has become a breakthrough 2026 season for one of Asia’s most exciting young tennis players.
A historic rise into the world’s top 20
Eala’s climb to No. 18 represents a significant moment not only for the Philippines, but for Southeast Asian tennis as a whole.
Her new ranking places her inside the world’s top 20 and gives the region a new benchmark in women’s tennis.
The achievement comes after a series of strong results that have steadily moved Eala up the rankings and established her as a serious presence on the WTA Tour.
Two major titles in 2026
Eala has already won two singles titles this season, beginning with the Birmingham Open in June.
That victory was especially significant because it made her the first Filipino player to win a WTA singles title.
She followed it with another strong result at the Mubadala DC Open in August, helping push her further up the rankings.
Those performances have transformed Eala from a rising prospect into one of the most talked-about young players in women’s tennis.
Wimbledon brought one of her biggest victories
Eala also made headlines at Wimbledon, where she reached the fourth round.
During the tournament, she defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek, producing one of the biggest wins of her career.
The result showed that Eala’s ranking rise is being supported by victories against some of the strongest players in the sport, rather than consistency alone.
It also helped increase her international profile well beyond Southeast Asia.
US Open is the next challenge
Eala is now preparing for the US Open, where she is expected to compete in both singles and mixed doubles.
In mixed doubles, she will partner Canadian player Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Their opening match is set against Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina.
If they advance, they could face another high-profile pairing in the following round.
The tournament gives Eala another opportunity to continue her rise and strengthen her position among the world’s leading players.
A new sporting figure for the Philippines
Eala’s success is also helping raise the profile of tennis in the Philippines.
While sports such as basketball and boxing have traditionally attracted more attention in the country, her rapid progress is introducing a new generation of fans to professional tennis.
Her journey from junior competitions to the world’s top 20 has made her one of the Philippines’ most visible young athletes.
It also gives aspiring players across Southeast Asia a new example of what is possible on the global stage.
A record-breaking season
At 21, Eala has already achieved several milestones that would define an entire career for many players.
She has won WTA titles, defeated a Grand Slam champion, reached the second week of Wimbledon and now become the highest-ranked Southeast Asian woman in history.
The next stage will be about consistency and maintaining that momentum.
But for now, the record itself is significant.
Alex Eala is no longer simply one of Southeast Asia’s most promising tennis players.
She is now officially the region’s highest-ranked female player ever.
