Dubai launches secure marketplace for million-dirham number plates

Dubai’s premium number plate market is getting a new digital platform designed to make buying and selling high-value plates more secure, transparent and efficient.

The new app, Mazal, is set to become the UAE’s first escrow-backed online marketplace dedicated to premium vehicle number plates — a market where individual plates can sell for tens of millions of dirhams.

Over the past three years alone, Dubai’s premium plate market has recorded around Dh1.7 billion in transactions, with the sector growing by approximately 20 per cent annually.

A safer way to buy and sell premium plates

Until now, much of the secondary market for valuable number plates has relied on social media, independent brokers and private arrangements.

Mazal aims to change that by introducing a more structured transaction system.

When a buyer and seller agree on a deal, the platform will hold the buyer’s money in an escrow account until the official ownership transfer is completed.

Only after the transfer is confirmed will the funds be released to the seller.

The system is intended to reduce risk for both sides, particularly when transactions involve number plates worth hundreds of thousands or even millions of dirhams.

Transactions can begin through a QR code

Users will be able to initiate a purchase or sale using a unique QR code.

Mazal will then manage the transaction process, including holding the required funds securely while ownership is transferred.

The platform has also partnered with Transguard to handle large cash transactions, adding another layer of security for buyers and sellers.

Mazal will charge a 5 per cent brokerage fee on each completed sale.

Number plates have become valuable Dubai assets

Premium number plates have long held a special place in Dubai’s luxury culture.

Rare combinations, low digits and distinctive numbers can become status symbols in their own right, with some buyers treating them as collectables or long-term assets.

Mazal executive board chairman Abdulla AlMeer said the idea for the platform has been developing for 13 years.

He believes the market has evolved significantly, particularly as more transactions moved to platforms such as Instagram and other social media channels.

Mazal’s goal is to bring those transactions into a dedicated marketplace where buyers and sellers can operate with greater confidence.

Plates ranked like gold

The platform has even created its own classification system for premium plates.

Mazal compares them to different grades of gold, categorising numbers as 18, 21 or 24 carat depending on their value and desirability.

The highest category is called “mithali”, an Arabic word meaning perfect or exceptional.

For collectors, the value of a plate can depend on factors including the number of digits, repetition, symmetry, rarity and cultural significance.

Dubai’s record plate sold for Dh55 million

The extraordinary value of Dubai’s plate market is already well established.

The emirate’s record number plate, P7, sold for Dh55 million at auction in 2023.

Other notable sales include AA9, which sold for Dh38 million in 2021, and DD6, which reached Dh37 million in March 2026.

Plates AA8 and DD5 have each sold for Dh35 million, while D5 was purchased for Dh33 million in 2016.

In Abu Dhabi, the number 1 plate sold for Dh52.2 million in 2008.

These prices have helped transform rare number plates from simple vehicle identifiers into a distinct luxury collectables market.

Founders are collectors themselves

AlMeer is also a collector.

His own number plate 609, displayed on a green Range Rover, is estimated to be worth around Dh900,000.

Another plate, 6900, used on his Lamborghini, is valued at approximately Dh500,000.

Mazal co-founder and chief executive Ahmad Al Nasser said premium number plates are increasingly being recognised for their scarcity, value and long-term potential.

The platform is designed to make that market more accessible while maintaining the exclusivity that makes rare plates so desirable.

A new digital layer for Dubai’s luxury market

Mazal arrives as Dubai’s market for collectables continues to expand across luxury watches, cars, art and other high-value assets.

Premium number plates fit naturally into that ecosystem, combining rarity, personal identity and status.

By moving transactions into a dedicated digital marketplace backed by escrow protection, Mazal hopes to set a new standard for how these assets are traded.

For a city where a single number plate can be worth more than a luxury home, the launch marks the next step in turning one of Dubai’s most visible status symbols into a more formal investment and collectables market.
