Mohammed bin Rashid launches the Great Arab Minds initiative
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the Great Arab Minds initiative on 4 January. The initiative will be based at the Museum of the Future, the Emirates’ new global science attraction.
Great Arab Minds is the Arab world’s largest movement aimed at finding exceptional talent among Arab scientists, thinkers and innovators in key fields, which aims to highlight and celebrate the region’s leading thinkers and inspire young people by their example. The five-year initiative will focus on areas such as physics and mathematics, software and data science, economics, higher education and research.
The initiative is backed by a AED 100 million fund and will be managed from the Museum of the Future by a committee of four Emirati ministers, who will develop a system to identify and highlight outstanding thinkers and talents to be supported through the initiative. The fund will support local and global partnerships in promoting research, development and innovation.
In a series of tweets, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said: “Today we are launching a new project to find 1,000 Great Arab Minds in physics and mathematics, software and data science, economics, higher education and research. Great minds built Arab civilisation – today I believe we have the talent to build a better world.”
The committee that heads Great Arab Minds is chaired by Mohammad Al Gergawi, President of the Museum of the Future, and includes Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Youth Affairs; Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Technology and Chair of the UAE Space Agency; and Omar Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications.
Great Arab Minds aims to seek out leading Arab minds and creative talents, shed light on their achievements and invest in their capabilities and ideas. The project aims to celebrate their work and inspire young people by their example.
The areas on which Great Arab Minds focuses are selected based on future development potential in key areas of innovation to drive development and economic growth.
