Hamdan bin Mohammed visits Bustanica
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed visited Bustanica, the world’s largest vertical farm, which recently opened in Dubai. During the tour, His Highness was accompanied by Adel Ahmad Al Redha, Chief Operating Officer of Emirates Airline, Mansoor Falaknaz, Bustanica Board Member, and Robert Fellows, Director of Operations at Bustanica.
“Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we will continue to launch new initiatives that apply modern agricultural practices to accelerate self-sufficiency in fresh food and support sustainable development, which is our top priority,” said His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed.
“The Dubai Food Security Committee is constantly reviewing current opportunities and challenges as part of the national food security strategy. Our plans to improve self-sufficiency in the agricultural sector by supporting the use of technology and applied research in food and agriculture are aimed at meeting the current and future needs of Dubai’s citizens and residents.”
“We have full confidence in the ability of our youth and institutions to continue to implement innovative projects that accelerate the pace of development and achieve optimal results in strategic sectors,” said His Highness. Dubai will continue to seek innovative ways to further strengthen the emirate’s resilience and food sustainability regardless of the global environment,” His Highness added.
During the tour, His Highness was introduced to the innovative technology used in the state-of-the-art hydroponic farm. The Bustanica complex was developed by Emirates Crop One, a joint venture between Emirates Flight Catering, one of the world’s largest catering companies serving over 100 airlines, and Crop One, an industry leader in vertical indoor farming. The world’s largest hydroponic farm is 330,000 sq ft, with an investment of $40 million.
Located near Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, the newly opened vertical hydroponic farm in Dubai is designed to produce over 1,000,000 kilograms of high-quality leafy greens per year, while requiring 95% less water than traditional farming. At any given time, the farm grows more than 1 million plants, producing 3,000,000 kilograms a day.
