Dubai tightens regulations for e-scooter operators

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has tightened the rules for e-scooter operators.

In particular, the two-wheeled vehicles must necessarily be equipped with headlights, taillights, a handlebar klaxon, front and rear reflectors, and front and rear brakes with built-in speed limiters (20 km/h).

In addition, e-scooter operators must ensure that they park only in designated parking areas, each vehicle must have an identification number and the logo of the company to which it belongs. The authority has urged operators to prevent e-scooters from parking on pavements.

More than 22,000 e-scooter permits have been issued in Dubai. E-scooters can only be used on designated trails, outside running and walking paths. The maximum driving speed is 20 km/h. It is only permitted to travel alone, wearing a reflective waistcoat and helmet.

Scooters must keep a safe distance from vehicles and pedestrians. Drivers must walk through pedestrian crossings by rolling the e-scooter next to them. Scooters may only be parked in designated parking areas. E-scooters may be used by drivers aged 16 years and over.

Failure to comply is punishable by law, with penalties including confiscation of the vehicle for 30 days, longer in the case of repeat offences, and fines for traffic offences.
